His early career included participating in the first marine controlled source electromagnetic research cruise alongside Dr. Charles S. Cox in 1979. Dr. Schultz earned his Ph.D. in geophysics from the University of Washington in 1985, where he showcased the necessity for 3-D solutions to the global EM induction inverse problem.
